Company Analysis - Pfizer

Seeking active recombinant vaccines

graph 1 - world status of Pfizer's R&D pipeline

Analysis of Pfizer's R&D pipeline using our data reveals that the number of compounds in preclinical and clinical stages of development has seen an overall decline (Graph 1) it currently has 33 projects in preclinical development and 39 at the clinical stages.

Of its late-stage clinical products, ticilimumab and maraviroc, which are both in Phase III trials, hold promise for the future, with an equal 76% chance of success (of being launched) according to our analysis. Our research also reveals that the fully-human monoclonal antibody for cancer, ticilimumab, is estimated to achieve US$500 billion in peak sales, followed closely by the anti-HIV compound maraviroc, which is estimated to achieve US$350 billion.

Pfizer already has numerous triumphs, including the FDA-approved smoking cessation treatment Chantix (varenicline) - winner of the 2006 Scrip Award for best new small-molecule drug - in addition to anticancer Sutent (sunitinib malate) and Viagra (sildenafil citrate), which are launched for erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Examination of Pharmaprojects' therapy groupings for Pfizer shows that neurological, anticancer and anti-infective are its top three areas of development. While it does have 14 biotechnology products - seven monoclonal antibodies, one RNA interference product, three oligonucleotides and three recombinants - it does not have any recombinant vaccines or gene therapies in the pipeline. Conversely, PowderMed's pipeline encompasses nine non-new chemical entities; one technology, six recombinant vaccines and two gene therapies.
