Apr2008 Drug Protein Targets
oncomodulin
Oncomodulin (OCM) belongs to the calmodulin superfamily of proteins also known as EF-hand proteins. It is a high-affinity calcium ion-binding oncodevelopment protein and is found in early embryonic cells, the placenta and tumours. Research has also shown it to be secreted by macrophages in the vitreous and retina in response to inflammatory conditions that promote optic nerve regeneration.
- Alseres is developing oncomodulin as a treatment for ocular indications such as acute eye injury and glaucoma.
- Its Entrez Gene ID is 654231.
prostaglandin D2 synthase, hematopoietic
Commonly known as PGDS or PTGDS2, this enzyme plays a key role in prostaglandin (PG) production through the conversion of PGH2 to PGD2. PGD2 is released by mast cells, basophils and Th2 cells and is a powerful bronchoconstrictor and vasodilator as well as inhibiting platelet aggregation. High concentrations of PGD2 have been detected in the airways of asthmatics. PGD2 production in the central nervous system and potential involvement in pain and sleep responses have also been demonstrated.
- Sanofi-Aventis is developing SAR-102608, a PGDS inhibitor for the treatment of allergic rhinitis and asthma.
- PGDS belongs to the Enzyme > Isomerase and synthase Target Family Groups and its EC number is 5.3.99.2. Its Entrez Gene ID is 27306.
pyruvate kinase, muscle
This isozyme of pyruvate kinase is more commonly referred to as PKM2 and catalyzes the production of phosphoenolpyruvate from pyruvate and ATP. It is found in cells with a high rate of nucleic acid synthesis, such as early foetal tissue and many tumour cells.
- Thallion Pharmaceuticals is developing CAP-232, a synthetic cyclic peptide somatostatin analogue, which acts on M2PK as an anticancer.
- PKM2 belongs to the Enzyme > Kinase Target Family Group and its EC number is 2.7.1.40. Its Entrez Gene ID is 5315.
