Nov2006 Drug Protein Targets
Transportin 1 and karyopherin (importin) beta 1
The import of proteins into the nucleus containing a nuclear- localization signal (NLS) requires the NLS import receptor. This receptor is a heterodimer made up of karyopherin (importin) Α and Β. The Α subunit recognises the NLS signal while the Β subunit docks the complex at the nucleoporins. The transportin 1 gene encodes the Β subunit of the karyopherin receptor complex.
- Roche is developing MKC-1, an orally-active, small-molecule cell cycle inhibitor for the treatment of cancer. It inhibits mitotic spindle formation, prevents mitosis and induces apoptosis. It binds to tubulin and the importin Β proteins.
- The Entrez Gene ID for transportin 1 is 3842.
- The Entrez Gene ID for karyopherin (importin) Β 1 is 3837
