ProEthic Pharmaceuticals announces availability of Lipofen in the US
8 Oct 2007

Cipher Pharmaceuticals’ Lipofen, a new prescription cholesterol-lowering drug, has been launched in the US by ProEthic Pharmaceuticals, after it acquired exclusive 10 year rights to the product’s US marketing, sales and distribution. ProEthic has launched both 50 and 150mg capsules to be used as an adjunctive therapy to diet in adults with primary hypercholesterolaemia, mixed dyslipidaemia, and hypertriglyceridaemia. It reduces elevated levels of LDL-cholesterol, total cholesterol Apo B and triglycerides, and increases levels of HDL-cholesterol, through agonising the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α.

Lipofen employs patented Lidose technology to enhance absorption of the active ingredient, fenofibrate, and thus offers patients a more effective way to manage their cholesterol profile and levels of triglycerides, when diet alone is insufficient. Chairman and CEO of ProEthic, Carl Whately commented, “We are pleased to offer a new and efficacious treatment option to patients seeking to reach their lipid goals”.

As its lead drug candidate, Mr Whatley believes it “…will enable us [ProEthics] to continue our strong record of growth as well as help to build significant shareholder value”.
