Therapy Analysis - Asthma
Final thoughts
Asthma is a highly prevalent disease, affecting approximately 1 in 13 adults and 1 in 8 children in the UK. Although corticosteroid treatment proves effective in 95% of asthmatics, the remaining 5% account for half of NHS annual asthma costs, making this difficult-to-treat population crucial to target, requiring novel drugs with new mechanisms of action. Combinational inhalers with corticosteroids and LABA have proved the most effective treatment so far, but still fall short in many asthmatics. Recently, with the advancement of molecular techniques, various proteins associated with steroid-resistant asthma, such as p38 MAP Kinase and HDAC2, have been identified. Hopefully further research and development by the pharmaceutical industry may produce new and effective treatments to combat this chronic and often debilitating illness.
