Therapy Analysis - Pharma R&D Annual Review
Cause for optimism
The pharmaceutical industry could be nearinga fork in the road. At the moment it is unclear which way things will go - so monitoring competitors becomes even more crucial.
So, what are we to make of this year’s review of the state of pharma R&D? Clearly one thing it does illustrate is how much statistics are affected by changes in reporting procedures, which is always worth bearing in mind. Although this makes this year’s data harder to interpret, the combination of data from two editorial teams does mean that the picture which Pharmaprojects presents currently is more accurate than ever before, and will continue to improve in the coming years.
We at Pharmaprojects are pretty confident that the growth reported cannot solely be accounted for by internal changes, and that the underlying picture is of growth in pharma R&D. We also believe that this organic growth is fairly significant.
However, it also comes at an increasingly uncertain and fretful time in the global economy. The much-talked about credit crunch and the fallout from the downturn in the US economy are leading to nervousness and pessimism, even in the socalled ‘recession-proof’ healthcare industry. The pharmaceutical industry could be nearing a fork in the road. At the moment it is unclear which way things will go – so monitoring competitors becomes even more crucial.
