So what does the future hold for asthmatics? Graph 3 demonstrates that while the improved PDE4 inhibitors and glucocorticoids have their place in asthma R&D, companies are nevertheless favouring the tried-and tested approach of targeting B2ARs. It may indeed prove to be the most promising class for the arrival of new and improved formulations. And while pharmaceutical companies are adventurous enough to try new approaches, it can only be hoped that further elucidation of the complex and integrated pathways involved in the immune response of asthma will result in fewer candidates failing at Phase III and more making it through to launch.
