Therapy Analysis - Epilepsy

Hippocrates correctly identified epilepsy
as a disease rooted in natural causes

Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological disorder that affects people of all ages. The term epilepsy has its root in the Greek epilambanein, meaning "to seize or attack", and represents a large group of disorders characterised by recurring spontaneous seizures, often referred to as fits.

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there are approximately 50 million epilepsy sufferers worldwide, of which nearly 90% are from developing countries. Every year 2.5-4.2 million new cases are diagnosed, and studies have found that therapeutic intervention can effectively control epilepsy in 50% of cases, can manage the condition in 25-30% (these patients still experience occasional seizures), whilst the remaining 20-25% of patients receive little or no benefit from currently-marketed therapies.
