HPV infection and its associated diseases is undoubtedly a major health problem worldwide, with rates of HPV infection among females on the increase. With a new UK-wide vaccination programme for adolescent girls beginning this autumn, the emphasis is now firmly on prevention of HPV infection. The current market shows the clinical landscape of HPV to be dominated by Merck & Co, with blockbuster Gardasil followed by a further 3 compounds for prevention and treatment of HPV infection. Worryingly, Pharmaprojects' data shows a significant bottleneck at the early stages, with 20 compounds currently traversing the uncertainty of preclinical testing. While Big Pharma has certainly lead the way, opportunities undoubtedly exist for other pharmaceutical companies to gain a foothold in this important market.
